The Adolphe Sax Album traces the development of saxophone solos before 1900, with a piano reduction as harmonic support.
Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone great (patented in 1846) was appointed Director of Music Stage at the Paris Opera between 1847 and 1894, the ideal place to promote and test his new invention instruments by including saxophone in some operas, symphonies, ballet music and of course regimental bands. It identifies many appearances of the instrument, timidly at first and then mixed with the orchestra in real picturesque solos.
There are only a mere handful of works of mixed chamber music before 1900. However, saxophone accompanied by a piano (or band) is commonly used. The music is mainly written by friends of the inventor, often heads of regimental bands that use a simple and classic style for the needs of outdoor entertainment (themes and variations virtuoso far from major masterpieces of the Romantic era).
