Having studied the clarinet with Colin Bradbury and Stephen Trier at the Royal College of Music, Chris Allen began his career as a freelance clarinettist, playing with D'Oyly Carte Opera, London Festival Ballet, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles. He then settled into a 30-year woodwind teaching career in Bedfordshire which gave him the opportunity to compose studies for woodwind and performance material for a range of instruments and abilities, solo, accompanied and ensemble.
The Sonatina for solo saxophone was written for a colleague's pupil and is one of a collection of similar pieces which are effectively concert studies. Chris Allen says of it "Collectively, the movements try to exploit the entire instrumental range(s) of both pitch and expression."
