Yamaha YSL-254CF Tenor Trombone

Trombone slides can lose their smooth action if they are bumped or dropped, which can be a particular concern for beginners and children who are still getting used to handling the instrument. The Yamaha YSL-254CF has been designed to help solve this problem. Maintaining the performance of a traditional trombone, its lightweight and durable carbon fibre outer slide makes the instrument easier to handle with confidence.

Lightweight and Durable – Carbon Fibre Slide

The outer slide of the YSL-254CF is made from carbon fibre, a lightweight and highly rigid material that also offers excellent resistance to corrosion.

The lighter slide section makes it easier to maintain a comfortable playing posture compared with a metal slide, while reducing strain on the right arm. The material is also highly durable, helping to reduce the risk of damage if the instrument is accidentally knocked or bumped.

The straight outer slide tubes are made from Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), rather than traditional brass. This makes the slide approximately 25% lighter than a brass outer slide and around 15% stronger. The result is an instrument that is easier for beginners to hold and more resistant to the everyday knocks that can put a conventional slide out of alignment.

The carbon fibre construction is also resistant to dents, distortion and corrosion, helping to reduce concerns about slide damage in schools, education settings and everyday student use. Despite the different material, the YSL-254CF retains a natural trombone sound, with a quick response and smooth airflow.

Sound with Confidence

We are sometimes asked, "Doesn't carbon fibre give the instrument a thin tone, like plastic?" The slide used on the YSL-254CF is made from Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), which is very different from ordinary plastic.

CFRP provides the rigidity and dimensional accuracy required for a trombone slide, helping to achieve smooth airflow and a quick response. It produces a natural trombone-like tone, allowing players to enjoy a familiar sound and perform with confidence.

Carbon Fibre Slide Configuration

The main difference between the YSL-254CF and a conventional metal-slide trombone is the outer slide. The straight sections of the outer slide are made from carbon fibre, while the slide crook is made from brass.
