Product Specs
One of six sonatas for flute & continuo by this little known Italian composer which was discovered in the Library of York Minster by the present editor, Jack Pilgrim and first published in 1983.
Serini was a member of an extensive musical family which seems to have originated in Cremona, north Italy. The Serinis were active during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, not only in Cremona but with church musical appointments in Venice and an uncle of Giovanni Battista's making a name for himself as a musician and composer in Vienna. The little we know of Giovanni Battista himself begins with his dedication, in 1755, of a collection of his manuscript music to his one time employer. This was Robert D'Arcy, fourth Earl of Holdernesse in Yorkshire and British ambassador to Venice from 1744 to 1746, for whom Serini had been 'director of all musicall Entertainment', presumably while D'Arcy had been in Venice. In any case, Serini's autograph scores found their way to York Minster Library where they are kept safe today, and the present sonata is part of that collection.
