Michael Dewar Head was born in Eastbourne on January 28th 1900. In 1920 he went to London to study composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Frederic Corder, and returned there in 1927 to teach the piano. He achieved a fine reputation as the composer of almost a hundred songs, beautifully written and often designed for himself to sing to his own accompaniment. He travelled extensively as an adjudicator and examiner, and it was while he was on an examining tour in South Africa that he died of peritonitis at Capetown on August 24th 1976.
