Seeds of Hope has been nominated as a finalist for the 2027 Outstanding Music Education Print Resource Award.
Seeds of Hope brings together a group of 22 renowned international composers with the aim of raising funds for music charities working with children in Palestine and those caught up in conflict around the world - PalMusicUK and Musicians Without Borders. All profits from the books go to these charities.
The collection, illustrated by artist Tiril Valeur, includes 24 piano pieces, from elementary to early intermediate, with a mix of solos and duets. Included are creative activities and suggestions to develop musicianship and engage the imagination.
As well as original music, the book includes Palestinian folk songs, such as Yomma Mweel Al Hawa and Ween Ala Ramallah, that express resilience, resistance and the abiding connection to the homeland. The book focusses on the theme of nature and the strength we all draw from the natural world.
- Elissa Milne’s Before the Flowers Bloom conveys both fragility and hope through repeating tones that create tension and resolution. Wynn-Anne Rossi’s Hills and Valleys captures the contours of landscape through a flowing melodic line shaped by Arabic modes.
- Melanie Spanswick’s Sharjara Zaytun depicts the steadfast olive tree using a melody derived from five notes of an Arabic scale. Other pieces are more direct: my own piece about growing vegetables celebrates the satisfaction of cultivating food, while Pam Wedgwood’s jazzy Cool Cats and Cucumbers was inspired by Ahmed Aaed’s rooftop garden.
- Garreth Brooke contributed an imaginative aleatoric piece titled Chickens!, filled with fragments of music representing pecking and clucking that can be played in any order. Marcel Zidani’s Bird Flying High evokes the image of a soaring bird, symbolising freedom.
