1815 - that was a year in which Schubert tirelessly created new works despite all his oppressive teaching duties. In addition to around 140 new songs, the second and third symphonies, four stage works, the first significant compositions for piano, the string quartet in g (D 173) and two masses were created: the one in G (D 167) and the one presented here in B. Bedenken If the mass was written in F (D 105) in May – July 1814 and that in C (D 452) in June – July 1816, then it turns out that of the six complete settings of the text, which we received from Schubert are handed down, four emerged in the short period of two years.
A first performance of the fair certainly took place soon after its completion, probably in Lichtental. Another performance can be inferred from the fact that some partially autograph parts - the organ part, 3 soprano parts and 3 alto parts - were made around 1820. Schubert's brother Ferdinand, who played the organ, reports of a third performance in early October 1824 in the parish church in Hainburg. The fair was first published in print in 1837 as op. 141 by the Viennese publisher Tobias Haslinger.
