Billed as an „introduction to jazz playing for piano“, this handsomely produced taster is divided into four broad sections.
It begins with blues, traditional and swing, followed by bebop, then ballads, standards and mainstream, and finishes with grooves. On the one hand, the pieces can simply be read through for pleasure, or the book can be used by non-players in collaboration with the companion CD as a means of extending their basic knowledge of the most essential aspects of jazz. But the real raison d’etre of the book is to provide some important springboards for beginners who wish not only to play standards but also to improvise.
Each piece comes with performance hints and explanations that are easy to follow.
This book would certainly inspire classical players of around the intermediate level with no prior experience of jazz to broaden their horizons.
