At the end of each lesson is a Practice Plan which specifies exactly which items should be played each day, how many times, over the course of six days. As the learning is cumulative, new items are added at each stage, but nothing is dropped from the practice schedules: although the schedules lengthen throughout the process, it is anticipated that knowledge will become so secure that the student will be able to cover most of the items each day within a very short space of time. The process has been designed to fit with the syllabus of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations. As the requirements of each Grade are covered, there is a plan guiding the student through practice of scales and arpeggios in random order. There is no requirement for the lessons in the books to be delivered in consecutive weeks: the practice plans can simply be extended until the student is ready to address new material.The process is presented in three volumes for each instrument as it is anticipated that it will be applied over a period of several years. A single volume under one cover would simply not survive daily use over this period. Graduating from one volume to the next will give the student a clearer sense of progression, whereas presenting a beginner with a book which contains Grade 8 material is likely to be demotivating.
Book 3 it is assumed that the advanced level player has acquired an appropriate degree of musical understanding and experience as well as a more developed technical facility. Greater emphasis is placed on the development of aural awareness and the two minor modes are presented as adaptations of their tonic major (the Advanced Level books will, nevertheless, ensure that the relationship of major and relative minor is fully understood). It is acknowledged that some fingerings will vary from player to player and from instrument to Sax Book 3 3D Cover
instrument. The options will be set out and discussed in considerable detail, but the student will be guided to building and consolidating a personal portfolio of fingerings.
