Music Theory for Viola – Book 5 continues the six-book series for viola students progressing towards Grade 1 theory level and beyond.
The book opens with a carefully guided introduction to the treble clef – an essential element of Grade 1 theory – before revisiting key concepts from the previous four books. The treble clef is returned to regularly and integrated with other topics throughout, with clear reminders to support secure note recognition.
Significant new areas of study include simple and compound time and the principles of correct beaming. These topics require students to rethink their understanding of rhythm and note grouping, and are explored in depth through carefully sequenced explanations and examples. Clear reminder boxes and practical exercises set out the rules in a straightforward, accessible way, helping students develop accuracy and confidence in reading and writing more complex rhythms.
The material remains firmly grounded in the viola wherever appropriate, ensuring that new ideas connect directly with practical playing. By aligning theory with lesson repertoire, learning remains purposeful and clearly applied.
Friendly characters Presto, Bravo and Poco continue to guide students through the material, providing encouragement while students take greater ownership of their learning.
