Written around the time of Saxtet' s tour of the Channel Islands in 1997 - hence the title - this fascinating rock ballad, with its striking theme and unique amalgam of classical and jazz crossover harmonies, would be a useful addition to the repertoire of both straight and jazz performers. Syncopated rhythms, changing meters and some convoluted key shifts make the piece fairly demanding, though the end product is immensely satisfying and accessible both to the performer and the listener. The written piano part closely follows the melody, though it isn' t necessary to double the tune and there is plenty of scope for an experienced jazz pianist to vary the written material.
