Surely the most spectacular new publication of the 2004 Dvorak Centenary is the completion of the ten-volume critical edition of his correspondence and documents.
The work is divided into three parts, each in chronological order. Part 1 (vols. 1–4) contains letters and messages written by the composer himself. Part 2 (vols. 5–8) encompasses all the correspondence he received. Part 3 (vols. 9–10) includes every available document on the composer, including contracts with publishers, diplomas, concert and theatre playbills. All of the letters and documents are reproduced in their original language, whether Czech, German or English. Czech documents are followed by summaries in German and English.
All letters, messages and documents not written in Czech are accompanied by complete Czech translations. Annotations refer to the letters’ provenance and previous publication and place them in the context of Dvorak’s life and music. The edition is thus not only of interest to historians and musicologists, but also to the broader musical readership.
