Breitkopf & Härtel Dieterich Buxtehude Complete Organ Works: Urtext, five volumes containing all of Buxtehude's organ pieces, edited by Harald Vogel, ISMN 9790004189528, EB 9472, 30.5 x 23 cm, 204 pages

More than 230 years have passed since the first publication of an organ work by Buxtehude (“Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern,” 1793) by Breitkopf. Since 1875, practical and scholarly editions have appeared repeatedly, reflecting the prevailing performance style of the time. In contrast, the new edition of the Complete Organ Works, edited by Harald Vogel, presents itself as a practical source edition, providing information derived from the historical notational tradition.

This edition is the result of Harald Vogel's many years of work as an organist and scholar. It comprises five handy volumes, which, in addition to clear musical notation on two and three staves, offer new information on the sources and the organs played by Buxtehude; thus, for the first time, elements of the construction and tonal design of the organs in St. Mary's Church in Lübeck are explained. Despite its practical focus, the source material is not distorted (e.g., by superfluous rests or the unhistorical adaptation of time signatures).

This edition is the result of Harald Vogel's many years of work as an organist and scholar. While volumes I/1 and III/1 are purely music volumes, volumes I/2, II and III/3 contain, in addition to music, the critical reports as well as extensive texts on, among other things, notation, ornaments and Buxtehude's original instruments.
