William Yeates Hurlstone (1876-1906) is one of the intriguing might-have-beens of musical history.' He published his first compositions at the age of nine and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music at eighteen. Following a period of frugal living and musical productivity, he returned to the RCM as Professor of Counterpoint when he was twenty-nine. A year later he died of bronchial asthma. Sir Charles Villiers Stanford had taught Hurlstone composition at the RCM and is said to have described him as his most talented pupil, when Hurlstone's student contemporaries included Vaughan-Williams, Holst and John Ireland.
A few years after Hurlstone's death, Stanford bemoaned the fact that he had died leaving so much of his work unpublished, but this remark may not have included the Four Characteristic Pieces. Hurlstone dedicated the first edition to GA Clinton who was a leading British clarinettist during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and died in 1913
