The Oxford University Press has a rich history which can be traced back to the earliest days of printing. They have an incredibly diverse publishing programme including academic, educational and music publishing.

In 1586 the University of Oxford’s right to print books was recognized in a decree from the Star Chamber. This was enhanced in the Great Charter secured by Archbishop Laud from King Charles I, which entitled the University to print ‘all manner of books’. In 1633 Delegates were appointed by the University to oversee the process of publication.

A Music Department was established in 1923 at a time when such musical publishing enterprises were rare. Now, their musical publishing output is extensive and Ackerman Music stock over 6000 titles of OUP sheet music across their three shops in Brighton, Hove and Chichester. Well known for their choral selection and for the Piano Time and Fiddle Time Series they also publish pieces for orchestra, keyboard, bowed strings, woodwind and brass as well as a selection of hymns and educational pieces.
