This Prelude was written in 1987 for Nicholas Daniel and Julius Drake. It makes eloquent use of the theme from the slow movement of Bach's Concerto in D for oboe and violin. Wilfred Josephs (1927 - 1997) was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music with Alfred Nieman and later in Paris with Olivier Messiaen and Max Deutsch. Although his early music followed the avant-garde trends of the time his music developed to combine lyricism with a romantic sensibility that is entirely his own. His output includes 12 symphonies, 22 concertos, 9 operas, 4 ballets, a major choral work Mortales Requiem and many chamber works and pieces for young players. Although his compositions have encompassed all areas of music, he is probably best known for his film and television scores. Television successes include I Claudius, The Great War, Cider with Rosie, Horizon, Art of the Western World, Drummonds and A Voyage Round my Father. He wrote the music for 30 feature films
