Ackerman Music was started in Hove in 1994 by Brian Ackerman. Today, Brian and his wife Lynne have expanded the business to include 4 shops in Sussex and a successful online presence. Brian has had many years experience of playing, making and repairing woodwind instruments and was awarded an ARAM for services to music. Lynne has been involved with music most of her life and is an active member of the local musical community and specialises in sheet music. Together they head a team of friendly and knowledgeable staff who aim to provide you high quality products at competitive prices with excellent service.

Ackerman Music has the largest stock of woodwind, brass and orchestral stringed instruments & sheet music across Sussex. In fact we are one of the largest suppliers in the whole country. With 4 shops, there is not much that we don't have in stock.
We have extremely competitive prices. Our buying power means that we usually have much better prices than an average music shop.
We are main agents for most of our suppliers, including Yamaha, Buffet, Besson, Keilwerth, Bach, Selmer Paris, Jupiter, Paesold, Hofner, Stentor, Trevor James and Pearl.
Sheet Music Specialists
As well as a vast selection of music (over 35,000 on this website), we re-order at least once a week from most publishers, so music is quickly obtainable even if it is not in stock. We have won the MIA award for 'Printed Music Retailer of the Year' in both 2008 & 2009.
Full Workshop Facilities
Our workshop checks over all new instruments before they are sold. We do not sell "out of the box" as all new instruments need careful checking and regulation.
We have full workshop facilities for carrying out repairs and adjustments on most woodwind, brass and string instruments.

Meet the Staff
These are some of our main staff that you might come across:-
- Brian Ackerman - Managing Director - Studied clarinet & saxophone at the Royal Academy of Music. Woodwind maker & restorer for over 30 years. Visiting lecturer on musical instrument repair at Merton college for over 25 years. Awarded an ARAM for services to music.
- Lynne Avery - Director - Lynne was manager of "Berns Music" for 21 years. Is responsible for the Epos system & sheetmusic. She plays woodwind instruments.
- Emma Rose - Area manager and shop manager in our Crawley branch. Plays flute. Had worked in our Chichester shop for 5 years before becoming area manager.
- Ghufran Robinson - Shop manager in our Hove branch. Formally a Registrar with the British Council. Plays the violin.
- John Mason - Shop manager in our Chichester branch. Started playing the guitar from the age of 11, he was classically trained but also plays acoustic, electric and bass. John studied at Chichester University and was a founder member of the West Sussex Guitar Club.
- Anthony Jarman - Shop manager in our Brighton branch. Plays piano and has also played clarinet, oboe, guitar and double bass. He has a wide knowledge of sheet music.
- Simon Parsons - Shop sales staff in Hove. Plays cello and brass instruments. Trained with the Royal Engineers. Formally a brass instrument teacher for 7 years.
- Geoff Lewis - Woodwind and brass repairer. Plays clarinet, saxophone and flute. Played with the Staffordshire regiment for 12 years. Geoff has been a professional repairer for over 25 years.
- Vincent Purcell - Stringed instrument repairs. Plays violin. HND in violin making at Guildhall University. Stringed instrument restorer, teacher and maker for over 20 years.
- Keith Bridges - Ecommerce. Plays the alto sax in a local big band and is also an ex-oboist.
