Our carefully selected clarinet range is designed to support musicians at every stage of their musical journey—from first-time beginners to advanced students, professional performers, and discerning collectors.
Whether you are selecting your first clarinet, upgrading to an intermediate model, or investing in a professional-level instrument, every clarinet we offer has been chosen for its build quality, intonation, reliability, and musical character. We stock instruments from leading makers such as Buffet Crampon, Yamaha, and other respected manufacturers, ensuring players have access to clarinets trusted by teachers, conservatoires, and professionals worldwide.
As a dedicated woodwind specialist, we understand that a clarinet is a precision instrument—one that must feel right, respond consistently, and support the player’s musical development.
A Brief History of the Clarinet
The clarinet has a rich and fascinating history that spans more than three centuries. Developed in the early 18th century by Johann Christoph Denner in Germany, the clarinet evolved from the chalumeau, gaining its distinctive register changes and expressive range. By the Classical period, composers such as Mozart were already exploiting its warm lower register and singing upper voice, cementing the clarinet’s place in orchestral and chamber music.
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, key system innovations—most notably the Böhm system—transformed the clarinet into the versatile, agile instrument we recognize today. These developments allowed for improved intonation, smoother fingering, and greater technical freedom, making the clarinet indispensable across classical, military, and early jazz traditions.
The Clarinet Today
Today, the clarinet remains one of the most adaptable and widely played woodwind instruments in the world. It is a cornerstone of orchestral music, wind bands, jazz, folk, and contemporary genres, prized for its wide dynamic range, expressive flexibility, and unique tonal palette.
Modern clarinets benefit from advanced manufacturing techniques, carefully seasoned tonewoods such as grenadilla, and refined keywork that supports consistency and comfort. However, despite technological advances, the clarinet is still an instrument that demands expert setup, careful adjustment, and ongoing maintenance—particularly if it is to perform at its best from day one.
How We Check and Prepare Every Clarinet – Complete Peace of Mind
Every clarinet sold by Ackerman Music is thoroughly checked, prepared, and play-tested in our in-house workshop before it leaves us. This is not a cursory inspection—it is a detailed, methodical process carried out by experienced woodwind professionals who understand the demands placed on a modern clarinet.
Our preparation process includes:
- Full mechanical inspection of all keywork, springs, rods, and screws
- Pad seating and seal checks to ensure airtight performance across all registers
- Key height regulation for even response and accurate intonation
- Spring tension balancing to provide a smooth, reliable action
- Bore and joint inspection, ensuring correct fit and alignment
- Play-testing to confirm consistent tone, response, and tuning
Clarinets are sensitive to even the smallest inconsistencies. A poorly adjusted instrument can hinder progress, cause frustration, and mask a player’s true potential. Our goal is to ensure that every clarinet arrives ready to play, properly regulated, and musically reliable, giving you absolute confidence in your purchase.
This level of preparation is one of the key reasons musicians across the UK trust Ackerman Music as their go-to woodwind specialist.
