This "Book" starts with the whole band playing unison C's and G's; and simple unison tunes; much like a Band Method; but progresses to traditional tunes in basic 4 part harmony.
Individual parts are available as a separate purchase as follows: The S.A.T.B. parts are distributed as follows :
In rehearsal, all instruments on a Part (1, 2, 3 or 4) may be rehearsed separately.
A piano reduction of the instrumental parts is printed throughout the score. This may be useful to play through the examples, or to augment and fill in missing harmonies. Where high pitch brass instruments are in use, it may not always be possible or desirable to tune to the piano; but the two-stave reduction will give teachers a clear picture of the four basic parts. The following optional parts are also printed, but they do not appear in the full score:The amount of theoretical and practical knowledge needed to start work on the FIRST BAND BOOK is extremely small, and new points of theory are introduced progressively.
Many of the folk-tunes, carols and hymns are in suitable keys for singing. The exceptions are where lower keys have been chosen to avoid a high range for the instruments.
It is my hope that teachers will find the FIRST BAND BOOK to be the solution to the problem of what to give young wind instrumentalists to play; and that players will derive much satisfaction and enjoyment from performing these pieces to the best of their developing ability.
KENNETH COOK Among the keenest delights of the amateur musician is ensemble playing. The HINRICHSEN FIRST BAND BOOK provides material for beginners in wind instrumental music who may not yet have mastered all the theoretical detail contained in the tutors of their choice, but who wish to make a Start with playing together. Those who teach young bands find that one of the chief stumbling-blocks in the initial stages of ensemble work is the multiplicity of parts in the normal brass or military band arrangement. This difficulty has been overcome in the FIRST BAND BOOK, as the harmony will be complete with a minimum of four players, but the pieces will sound most effective on a full Brass or Military Band, with the parts allocated as suggested.
