Having obtained History and Music Degrees from Cambridge University by 1929, Arnold Cooke went to the Hochschule f''r Musik in Berlin for three years where he studied with Hindemith. He returned to Cambridge for a year as Music Director of the Festival Theatre and, in 1933 was appointed Professor of Harmony, Counterpoint and Composition at the Royal Manchester College of Music, now the Royal Northern College of Music. In 1938 Cooke moved to London and began to make a name for himself as a promising young composer, but his career was interrupted by World War II service in the Royal Navy. In 1947 he became Professor of Composition at Trinity College of Music, London, where he remained until his retirement in 1978.He continued to compose until illness intervened in 1993, twelve years before his death.
